Peculiar philosophy of a bird hunter

Conversation between two twenty-year-old students, a girl that we’ll call X, and a bird hunter, Y.

X: What are you planning to do next week end?

Y (excited): I’m going on a bird hunting trip!! Weather is great for that! Don’t stare at me like that! I’m saving the environment by going there! Yes yes I am.

X: Hunting birds and saving the environment? How that?

Y: If I don’t go, my friend will shoot 50 birds. If I go, we’ll both shoot 25 birds, you see!! I’m saving the environment!

[a bit later]

Y: Anyway I don’t care if birds disappear, as long as it is after my death.

[later]

Y: Anyway a lot of birds pass. Sometimes we are twenty hunters, we kill hundreds of birds, and other thousands pass. So it’s false to say that birds are disappearing.

[…]

Y: But birds are essential in a balanced diet!

Y: I like the thrilling of hunting. The birds move, they have different trajectories every time, it’s so exciting!

Interesting way of viewing things, doesn’t it?

Birds are very important for the ecosystem, not only for their beauty ; they also hunt a quantity of pests and insects that can harm agriculture and destroy cultures.

To help birds proliferate, you should plant a variety of trees in your garden (biodiversity is important) including some fruit trees (like the medlar tree for example). If you don’t have a garden, focus on your balcony! There are more birds than what one’s would think, even in the middle of the city, and they know how to find their way to friendly places…

For those who understand French, I advice you to read the following article called La Chasse au Liban un vrai carnage. It describes with precision the situation which is very shocking.

Also, here follow 2 Facebook groups supporting birds and campaigning against hunting in Lebanon. I invite you to join them!

i used to be a hunter, i used to dream about hunting trips. but now i can not do it. i can not kill so i can feel good about my self esteem. i learned this habit from my dad . hunting is very challenging and entertaining, but its worth killing for it ? and in lebanon going hunting is a trend, we can stop that by educating the new generation,at early education, at schools, tv , radio, also by diverting this entertament to some thing that does not require spilling blood. like target shooting.and others.
